England vs Belgium | World Cup 2018, Group G | Thursday, June 28 | Kaliningrad Stadium

With both nations having already qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup, England and Belgium will battle it out for top spot in Group G in Kaliningrad.

Belgium appeared to be favourites to top the group following their 5-2 win against Tunisia, but England’s stunning 6-1 win over Panama has moved them ahead of the Red Devils by the slimmest of margins – fair play rules.

Either side would top the group with a win on Thursday, but a draw would see the standings come down to either fair play rules – with England currently ahead with one less yellow card – or the drawing of lots should their disciplinary records end up equal after 90 more minutes of action.

Head to head

England have a good record against Belgium, winning 15 of their 21 meetings against the Red Devils. The two nations have met twice at World Cups, with a 4-4 draw in 1954 and a 1-0 win for the Three Lions in 1990.

Team news

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku looks set to miss the match, with the Manchester United forward still battling to shake off an ankle injury suffered during the Group G victory over Tunisia.

“He had a really difficult knock against Tunisia and probably tomorrow is one day too early, but I don’t think it is going to take any longer than that,” Belgium manager Roberto Martinez said.

Martinez may rest more stars after Eden Hazard strained his calf and Dries Mertens also hurt his ankle against Tunisia.

“In international football, the reality now is we have qualified. There will be opportunities to give minutes to other players. There will be major changes against England.”

England captain Harry Kane may be one of the players rested in Kaliningrad after scoring a hat-trick against Panama to take his tally to five goals from just two games.
